With my all my recent down time I have been thinking about what I do and all that stuff. I have been thinking about equipment long and hard and the more I think about it the less I am scared to purchase the best of the best gear out there. Especially film gear.

Years ago I had been a bit of a tight ass with gear, it worked for me back then. I spent fuck all on affordable film cameras. Learnt my minimal kit inside and out and barely shot much film because I was so tight. I had no money for film and processing. I remember missing amazing shots because I was scared to expose my frame that cost me a dollar. Pathetic when I know those shots would have been the ONES. That stupid fear made me better at what I was doing in the end. So thats a positive out of a having a fear some how.

But the flip side is that my "affordable" gear has broken down and I have replaced those bodies around 5 times and switched lenses and in the end it cost me a fair bit over a long period of time. So I have realised its better to purchase the equipment once. But it takes years to know what that equipment is that will endure your career and help your craft during its journey forward.

So anyway now I know what gear helps me feel my images and I now know what equipment would last my lifetime of shooting those pictures. That equipment is super expensive yet the quality and durability will last as long as my passion for photography. For a life time.

Its time for me to sell some old gear off and start fresh for my new chapter.

2012 is going to be a bit different for me

2012 didnt kick off the way i wanted it to.

I tore my ACL clean off the bone and im looking down the barrel of over 6 months on crutches including a fun knee reconstruction. So lots of computer time ahead and not much shooting going down.

Its not all bad.

Im really looking forward to new doors opening, re-vamping my tired old website, working on exhibitions and expanding my skills.

I'll be blogging more and sharing more images.

A Preview. Chasing the curve: a portrait of the sea.

Today marks one month before I launch my first self published solo book, Chasing the curve: a portrait of the sea. So I thought I would show a small preview of some spreads from the book. I am yet to hold a copy, but I should be able to do so in around 5 days. Im so excited! There are a few things I can release about the book. Its a hard cover book with a beautiful hard cover sleeve. Its essentially a collection of shots that celebrate the wonder of the sea. Its landscape in format. 164 pages. No words, just pictures. And its been shot over a 10 year period on and off, all on 35mm film.

I will have more stuff to talk about soon, but for now here is an example of whats to come!

Book round two

I have been working on my book on and off over the past month or so.

First I had to edit all my slides into a final(ish) select. That took forever.

Then I had to scan that select on my imacon dream machine. That took even longer. Heaps longer.

Recently I have been playing with formats. This is something that will make or break a book.

I have been playing with formats longer than scanning. You have to get the fundamentals right when making things from things. I get super fussy over viewing distances and the way your eye runs around a page and an image. The spaces around the image are equally as important as the image size itself. They should not be treated as two separate elements, but one. And when they work its like visual magic.

Im not trying to say that I have done that. Created the perfect layout. Cause there is no perfect layout. I am just happy with what I have done. Yesterday I went to the print shop down the street with a usb thingy and came back with some prints.

I cut the pdf files out and stuck them on our studio wall. To check them out. Nothing beats this old school method of trial and error. Just by doing this I have eliminated 3-5 layouts that looked good on screen but suck printed. Its a great process!

Today I am doing cover designs and font selections.

But that shit will never hit my blog :) I cant reveal those gems.

Anthea Page. An unplanned shoot. Goes to plan. Or something like that

This afternoon was one of the most of the most random shoots I have ever done.

Anthea got in touch with me this afternoon at around 2pm. She said to come have some tea at her house and shoot a couple of pictures before she jumped on a plane down to Sydney. We didn't plan a thing at all.

Half an hour later, I picked up my camera from home then dropped into her place and said hi. She lives just down the road from my studio so I think that may mean we might shoot more often.

We chatted, then shot some pictures. And we got some great ones too.

I cant wait until we develop a concept and style a shoot. It will be fun!

i dont know if this makes sense. i never do. and i dont mind if it doesnt.

all i know is that sometimes. is when it is times.

Today was pretty cool photographically for me.

I shot an a lovely lady called Cassandra.

We had both never done this before.

Cass had never posed, and I had never shot a girl semi nude before, it was kinda good that we both had never done it before cause we could laugh at each other being nervous. Pretty funny, for us any way :) Guess u had to be there :)

So here are the results for an afternoons shooting.

All natural light in my studio in burleigh. All images are jpgs out of camera.

Maybe a minor contrast tweek or something and a crop.

Really happy to shoot this and heaps of respect goes out to Cass. So cool!

im pretty quiet at the moment with outside work so im using this free space and time to get back into why i like making stuff. ive been digging. lots. through all my film. Im gunna make a book of wave pictures with no words. words are silly in photo books. who needs em?

its been a really good experience so far. ive learnt alot about my personal work and how it has changed over the past 10yrs and how its still the same. most images i thought were great, are really crap. but then ive found pictures in these 1000's of slides that are diamonds in the rough. just little glimmers in the mess that is my film pile. so having said that i have to look at every single frame with a fresh eye. i just never know what will be in the next sleeve or mount. its a long process but its going to be worth it!

i think alot when im doing this stuff. sometimes im really decisive and can just chuck a whole roll in the bin, and other times i will dwell on the weirdest, technically crap image for 20 mins and see stuff i never saw before and keep it. these are often THE ones.

alot of the process of editing for me, is pretty emotional. not like i get upset or something … i mean, if the shot feels great im keeping it. i dont care if its not sharp. i dont care if there is a water drop where its not "ment" to be. the beauty of this whole silly little book making game is that i can do what ever the hell i want and choose images that i like. most people may hate what i like. but i have to sit here, and make decisions and im just rolling with how i feel. so this collection of pictures could end up all over the shop. i dont know … im just going to trust she will be fine and some one might buy the book or something.

im really excited by this though … its been something i have been wanting to create as a photographer, designer and an artist for over 10yrs and it feels fucking good to get it started. its a project im really going to loose myself in. get weird and make my pictures flow across pages how i want. its so fucking exciting!

ive gotten weird already. ive documented me in my mess.

better get back into it while ive still got a roll on …

LOWDOWN

A lil while ago, my great mate mr Nick Lawrence thought it would be a smart idea to write an article/portfolio piece for Lowdown magazine on my photographic art. I thought he was joking. But here is the spread and text. It happened. Its a hard mag to get out here in Australia. But basically it was the mag the Monster Children guys used as inspiration to create a street landscape mag here in Australia. Lowdown is from Berlin. Its really trendy. Way too trendy for me. Im kinda dorky ay. Its the coolest cool kid thing out there. Im not cool, i was just in it. I suck. The lay out was kinda a weird as the mag is cool. Right?

its been a while since i bothered to blog. some times im into it and most times im not at all really ... i cant remember where i left off but i think a few interesting things have gone down in my life and with work too. 2011 feels exciting so far. one month in and i have picked up 3 new huge clients and im ready to dive deep into my first book project. i cant wait to get truely creative again, experiment and play! it gets me so excited just thinking about it!

since i released my new website i have had some great interest come my way, so im stoked that all the hours of hard editing paid off. i turned down work while i was developing my site so my mind was clear and focused on the outcomes, and im proud that it was as effective and successful as i could have dreamed. the likes of Nike and Redbull approaching me feels pretty flattering. And even more so when they are happy with the work too.

so i worked on two editorial pieces for Redbull. One on Tom Wegner and the other on the Iron Man series that was finished in Noosa. The iron man shoot was the hardest shoot of my life. no question. it was PISSING with rain. ALL day. it was the rain that caused the floods here in qld. so im not talking it up. It was the worst conditions you could ever imagine for a shoot. The shots came out pretty good too. moody, rainy, and raw. i just ran around with one body and one prime lens and an umbrella. i was using my d3 and 50mm 1.4. other people were running two bodies. one with a wide zoom. the other with a tele-zoom. these people where struggling in the rain and one guy drowned two bodies, even with all of his pro protective hoods. i took the trent approach. kept it simple. one body and prime in one hand, umbrella in the other and i was sweet. no problems. it was risky covering an event with a prime. but hell, it worked. i figured if i can shoot weddings with one lens i can shoot an iron man event too. why the fuck not hey?! Redbull loved the moments captured and in the end thats all that matters. client happy, im happy!

the tom shoot was awesome. best guy, we hung out he showed us around his workspace and then went surfing at the points in noosa. i took one of my all time fav portraits of him working too so i was really happy to spend such a cool day with him and get a great image too. so good when that happens.

ummmm ... what else ... i just got back from a swim wear shoot in the cook islands. that was epic. had the best time with all the girls and we had fun working hard to get the results they needed. again at some stages it was my weather knowledge and ability to read location conditions in such a changeable climate that helped make the shoot flow and work well when it HAD TO. you dont get a second chance. for a few days there we were chasing 20min windows of opportunity to shoot. and it just worked. on shoots like that you have to read the conditions. light angle, wind direction, speed, light quality etc. then have to combine all of those elements with location that makes the swimwear pop or speak its own voice. its really hard some times. especially when you have to motivate a group to believe what you can "see". so many problems to solve and then as the photographer you have to keep the moral of the team up so the vibes are good and moment tend to fall into place. its quite a game that you have to play to make it all seem effortless and natural. i love the challenge of it. some of the shots were taken in the rain, because we had too and they looked amazing. i just had to make it work under pressure.

i think i can show a couple of images but not many here for now. when i get clearance from the company i will update my website and blog.

... next week i am going to sydney to shoot a winter campaign for a shoe company. pretty sweet location apparently. massive car wreckers. should be awesome.

then the day after i am shooting another winter campaign for Glue stores with two brands, Nude Lucy / Lulu & Rose. It should be awesome as well. Be a great experience. I like the challenge of a great breif, amazing models and location. its all too dreamy. ill be shooting tethered through lightroom 3 so that will be fun to see treated images pop up as they are taken. such an amazing time saver!

any way, im gunna go to the shops and get some new clothes. well over due for a bit of a clothing tidy up.

Yesterday I was lucky enough to shoot one of the Billabong models Jocelyn.

I had Ness Falzon helping with make up ( bloody perfect ) and my good mate Mr Nick Lawrence as my fleccy man.

I would have to say they are up there with my best shot ever if not the best.

Im so happy with the images and hopefully Jocelyn is too :)

Im keeping this post short for now cause im just about to go and shoot again in these unseasonally amazing conditions.

Ill post more images in a few days, but for now its back to shooting!

good challenge - 20+ shots in a day and no flash

when i was in sydney i had to shoot my dad's advertising product stuff. the shots will end up in country style magazine, qantas magazine and maybe vogue, not too sure ... it was a good little test as far as lighting goes. i did not use one flash the whole time. i know its nothing overly exciting to look at, but im happy with the results and so is the client. all these shots are jpgs out of camera with no ps work.

now im heading back to the goldy to design the adverts and winter catalogue. that will keep me busy till chrissy. along with lots of other stuff on, i will be happy to relax come the 25th ...

Ninth Wave - Book to blow minds

Hey,,,

Earlier in the year Sean Doherty called me up and had a bit of a chat. He Wanted me to scrape through my drives and sweat over my lightbox for a couple of days to dig out 20 of my favorite surf images that I had ever taken - action or not - just whatever. He said it was for a book. I fucking love books so I said fuck yes. Done.

So it ends up that he pulls together work from the likes of Jon Frank, Ted Grambeau, DHump, Shorty, Stu Gibson, etc. It should be fucking brilliant. Well worth the purchase. With each image, there is a story attached. Theres 100 images over 220 pages, so I am expecting big pictures, beautiful design and typography. An epic chrissy present, be sure to hunt around for it this summer ...

NEW WEBSITE!

Hi everyone,

It took so long but finally my new website has been completed! 90% of the work on there has been shot over the last 2 years, so its really current apart from a few trips here and there. My mate Liam O'Toole worked on it for me over a period of a month on and off. There's quite a bit of stuff in there, a fair variety of work. Over 500 images in total I think.

Inside Sport

Yesterday arvo I had to shoot a small editorial piece for Inside Sport magazine.

It was about Wes Burg and his training programs. It was a really fast paced shoot and It only went for an hour. I was working with two cameras, one in my housing with an 85mm and one on land with a 50mm. I was constantly switching between the two, to achieve the desired shots in such a short amount of time. My assistant Bec was helping me with the camera switches and as much as she thinks she is not doing much some times it means alot for me to just bounce a quick idea off someone thats not directly involved with shooting. Sometimes I need some outside clarity!

It was raining and the worst light ever ... not really the best conditions to shoot in especially when I know how pretty this beach can get as I used to live directly across the road from it and watch these guys train in amazing light all the time ... oh well ...

Appart from all the seemingly impossible challenges I faced in a crazy time constraint I managed to get shots that tell the story well from a wide variety of view points.

Anyway,,, its Friday arvo and nearly time for a beer thats for sure, so I'll let you go.

Taiwan

Hey sorry for the lag on posts and all that.

Been pretty busy and stuff ... just got my film back from my trip to taiwan. I shot 17 rolls thats only 600 shots, some people shoot that in half a day on digi, I did it over a week. Got some nice moments and learnt alot about how I have changed my shooting style, then adapted it back to film. Pretty cool experience. And I have had fun on the light box and scanner this arvo ...

Oh, yeah I went to taiwan with Mitch Rawlins and Jarrod Gibson. It was a manufacturing trip. Had the best time, not may waves but got some great pictures and drunk alot of piss and ate heaps of great local food including chickens feet, pigs blood and pigs guts. Rad.

Any way here are some shots, all out of my Imacon virtual drum scanner as shot. Pretty happy with these but the real goodness is yet to be scanned.

Ill post soon and take it easy,,, oh my site will be functional by Friday next week. Bloody excited to share :)

Fleur is a freaking champion!

Such a fun person to work with, full of fun and positivity! Perfect combo for picture making!

Yesterday we drove down to Kirra beach at magic hour and shot some pictures.

Fleur is a fabulous photographer her self and knows what its like to shoot and understands light and poses well.

Anyway,,, so we were shooting and stuck around and waited for the moon to come out.

Ill post more shots soon of the moonlit goodness :)

Grace light test

Yesterday it was cloudy all day here on the goldy.

Until i went to take pictures with my mate Gracey.

The sun poked its head out for about half an hour. That seemed to be enough time to get a couple of images.

We were fighting a little south current in the ocean and the fleeting afternoon sun.

Pretty lucky to get these shots and it was fun to shoot in the water! A bit of trial and error.

This is the first time i have ever shot a model in the water. Im pretty happy with where things could go from here.

I am shooting again this afternoon in the water.

Should be great.

if its not hard to do, im hardly doing it

after a long hard trip with mitch rawlins earlier in the year he said something to me that stuck.

... and it was, "Mate, if the shot takes less than 5 mins to shoot its not worth it, we will shoot something else."

it took me a while for this to actually sink in. because it goes against my photographic approach of shooting on the fly to capture that fleeting moment.

but the point he was making has stuck with me ever since. he was saying that to make work that matters you need to go above and beyond to get the results, and nothing could be more true.

on this trip everything was super hard to do. setting up all the gear to shoot one shot took over 45mins of work and the camera had not even recorded any thing yet. So all up one 5 sec clip in the movie may actually take up to 2 hours to perfect. This happened every day for three weeks as well as surfing, shooting stills and chasing swells along WA's never ending coastline.

by the end of it we were all stuffed. but we had the results that mattered. It was all those 5 sec clips that glue the movie together and tell a story. They are the little bits that make all the difference in the end and they are the hardest to do.

funny that.

so i have come up with this little title of

"if its not hard to do, im hardly doing it"

i like to think it means "If the work does not test my limits, my heart will not be in it."

80/20 rule

The 80/20 rule is where its at. It could not be more true in my eyes.

Check it out here.

Basically cut out all the trivial bullshit in your life and give your all to the 20% of stuff that really matters because thats where 80% of your best comes from.

There are two hard parts to this.

a. saying no to stuff that does not matter.

b. knowing what REALLY does mater, so you can say no to all the other trivial shit.

Apply this to every aspect of what ever you are doing and there are so many benifits. more free time, more energy, improved effectivity, and the list goes on and on...

I shared this because it MATTERS.

My thought for the day is this.

The more I learn about life and light the more I know that I know nothing.

I dont like the thought that I know nothing. It feels pathetic. You learn for years and years and then get to a stage where you think you know everything. Then you get through another barrier and you awaken to the fact you know nothing. It feels like your starting all over again. Its refreshing. I guess it keeps your curiosity and learning experiences fresh at a stage when they need to be.

Its quite a paradox though. Learn "everything" and knowing nothing. Anyone feel the same way?

Oh well, back to the beginning I go ...

Yeah, so i'm just stuck on my computer today diggin through my archives for my new website. It's pretty fun looking at everything I have done over the last couple of years. Gets me excited for the future - i just dont know what it holds?!

Found Boards - Mitchell Rawlins

I worked with Mitch for about 3 weeks in WA on a look book project for Found Boards.

It was the craziest wave chasing trip I have ever done.

We both put so much energy and work into the trip we were able to create too many images for the 100 page Found Boards lookbook.

Im really proud of the work we produced and I can tell you most people would have given up when we pushed on and made amazing things happen. Hopefully you can see the effort in the images.

Mitch and I are both proud to be launching the book soon.

It will come with a limited edition shirt as well, and they will sell like crazy!

I am really happy to work for clients like Surfing World.

They are the best surfing mag in Australia, if not in the world at this current point in time. The boys at the magazine have complete trust in me to shoot images for them, they give me a brief and then let me do my thing. This is the type of working relationship that harvests the best work from all parties involved and creates special magazines.

I love communicating with people, either through conversation, language or visual means like design or photography. But to me blogging seems like a strange way to communicate. The primary reason why I find it strange is because the audience is silent. Are you there? Are you listening? Do you care? Well if you are there, listening and care I want to hear that voice. And i'll keep up the posts :) Comment your ass off, give me a reason to blog. Please? Because I like sharing images with the world and people. Sharing is a two way thing so give a shit and lets make this fun!

So its been well over a year since I posted.

It would be a bloody long catch up post. I rekon it has been the longest, most productive, action packed and fun year of my life, Ill just leave it at that and let your mind wonder.

Well people … I have been really lazy with this and am about to kick this shit back in action. Quick list of work/happenings since my last blog update in no particular order. Its 4am, I cant sleep and need to do something to get sleepy again, i am going slightly crazy here … This will be random and sloppy … and quite possibly full of shit.

Ok here it goes…

been to South Aust twice.
been to Sydney four times.
been to Morton Island.
designed heaps of stuff for people.
took some photos of lots of things.
won little weeds, heat one.
spoke infront of people about photos i have taken.
sold heaps of shit on ebay.
bought heaps of shit on ebay.
bought a 28mm lens when drunk on ebay - i think i have an ebay problem.
bought a leica M6 + 50mm f2 (its amazing)- i think i have an ebay problem.
broke up with my ex chick.
had some fun times on the piss with mates.
rode pumping kirra with my amazing friend, tate, with no one out. great times.
took photos in an ice bar of a girl in a bikini.

i cant think of much else really…

more ( big ) things are coming and i will blog more soon.

ok, i better go do something else now like read a book or something so i can sleep …

Today was a big day to say the least. I had a rather pleasant phone call this morning. Mr Andrew Coppin ( passionate photographer and top bloke ) from Photo Art Gallery called me up to inform me I had won a brand new camera. A Nikon D3 Woooot!!! The wonderful people at Photo Art Gallery welcomed me into their offices ( In Sydney) and presented me with my prize/certificate. I am still over the moon about it!!! Last month I was selected as a finalist in the MORAN PRIZES. This is a massive thing for me, I am really happy about it! Its a super prestigious portrait comp with both art and photography sections. There are 40 finalists and they will all be on display in the NSW State Library from 10th March onward, including my "Save Kirra" portrait ( seen 3 posts below). I have bugger all chance of taking home the $50,000 prize without some kind of strange miracle happening. Cross your fingers for me peoples!

There was a massive paddle-out at Kirra Beach today. It was all about making a statement to get the almighty old school grinding Kirra back in action. Around 1500 people did the paddle-out. I swam around and took some shots. I bagged one that I love and it has all of the spirit of the day in one frame. So I came home a happy camper. Great Aussie Day too, chillin with good mates and laughs all round. Good times!

Today I was asked to shoot the richest bloke in Australia… Clive Palmer. Bit of a news type job but pretty fun. The maddog threw me a thumbs up the first time he saw me, made for a gold shot ha ha, looks like he means it too, which was almost kinda strange… anyway… He flew into the media circus via chopper to officially sign up some huge soccer names onto the Gold Coast united team. I purchase a used Mamiya 7 recently. Its an amazing camera. Shoots 6x7 photos, does it whisper quiet, is a rangefinder and has arguably the best lenses on our planet for medium format cameras in its class. Its friggin amazing. I just got my first couple of test rolls back from the lab and I have fallen in love. The quality is astounding. Like having a 100 mega pixel digi but nicer because its simply film… oh yeah… I cant wait to see what I can do with this thing! Oh god its good!!! I just had my award winning Kirra Underwater shot printed INTO 2mm metal sheet. NOT onto but INTO. Then had the sheet set into 15mm of perspex to create a tough as hell, industrial strength piece - 1000mm x 700mm. Its a one off piece and is unique. I am showing/selling it at "Sound Waves", a Surf Aid fundraiser in Bondi… 50% of the sales from the night go to an awesome cause. Get down to Sahnia Restaurant & Bar, 106 Campbell Pde, Bondi Beach by 7pm on the 11th Dec. Cheers!

Gee I am one happy bloke today. A while ago I entered four submissions to a global photo comp. From four I had three amazing results and I am more that happy with the opinion of the judges. I won a category, was a finalist in another and highly commended for my last entry. So I will be attending a fancy pants dinner and drinks in Sydney later in the year to see what I won in prizes wooooo! : )

Birthday Surprise!

This year I had the best birthday of my life. I was on a trip in WA for Riptide magazine and shot a wave called The Box for over 6 hrs. It was the best surf I had been in for a long time. It was amazing. Pumping 4-6 feet and perfect. So after I pretty much had one of the best birthdays I can ever remember I opened my emails before bed and found that I was being published on the front cover of Riptide Magazine! A dream come true! It is going to be hard top such a birthday in the future! Well… so i was on the cover and I just got a copy back from the framer today and hung it on my wall… such a great feeling.

This shot here is a recent personal favorite. Its at Kirra Beach. Underwater vision of a perfect spinning sand bottom tube. The guys at Surfer Magazine nominated it as one of the Photos of 2008 at their annual Peer Poll Awards. The image also scored a Silver Distinction Award in the 2008 Australian Professional Photography Awards. More than happy!
